Templates in Visio

When you work in Microsoft Word or Excel, you often begin a new document or spreadsheet based on a specific template file. That template provides you with the working environment you need to create the particular document or spreadsheet for the task you have chosen. Similarly, when you begin a new Visio diagram, you often base your new diagram on a particular diagram type: organizational chart, flowchart, business process diagram, or network design. This is done by choosing a particular template in Visio. Visio understands that you do not want to alter the original template but, rather, that you want to create a new diagram based upon the parameters and environment that the particular template provides.

A template is actually a very easy thing to create. A template consists of a drawing, any associated Stencils of Visio SmartShape symbols, and the specific layout of all of the graphic elements that enhance the understanding of the particular diagram type you wish to produce.
