Stencils

Visio Stencils are one of the things that make Visio so unique. The concept of stencils came from old engineering architecture and data processing school assignments. When drawing diagrams, students used to work with green Berol Ellipse templates and Flowchart templates. These templates or “stencils” were a tracing guide for the needed symbols. Each stencil contained numerous symbol outlines, all related in a common subject or theme. Visio forwarded this concept and created Visio Stencils of SmartShape symbols. The Stencils are green as a tribute to those old stencils. Visio Stencils are an organizational structure for SmartShape symbols. SmartShape symbols for a particular solution are grouped together on a Stencil and are accessible when the end user begins a diagram based on a particular diagram type.

We have already seen how Masters can be added to Stencils, how new Stencils can be created and saved, and how, under Visio 2000, Visio will open a Stencil in read-write mode that was previously opened only in read-only mode.
