Boolean Operations

Users of Visio solutions really need to know only a small amount of the Visio functionality to be able to effective create and query highly intelligent Visio diagrams. “Drag and drop and pull on the green things” is the phrase we banty about. However, you, as the developer of the solution, must know how to draw with Visio in order to create intelligent SmartShape symbols. You must be able to use the Line tool, the Arc tool, the Ellipse tool, the Rectangle tool, the Freeform tool, the Pencil tool, and more. These are the basic drawing tools of Visio. Often you will want to create complex boundary paths. It would be nice to have a set of tools available to make the pure creation of that geometry easier. This is why Visio presents you with the Boolean operation tools. All of these tools are accessible via selection Shape, Operations from the menus. I am going to classify these into three general categories: Basic Boolean Operations, Boolean Editing, and Utilities. Let's start with the Basic Boolean Operations first. The operations are

  • Union

  • Combine

  • Fragment

  • Intersect

  • Subtract
