Chapter 3. Modifying Visio SmartShape Sy... > Grouping of SmartShapes Symbols

Grouping of SmartShapes Symbols

As you looked at each symbol that comprised the telescope, you noted that each of the symbol's PinX and PinY were using intershape references to create an association between them. Sometimes this is practical, but it can be cumbersome at other times. Another mechanism for associating symbols is grouping them. In order to illustrate this; let's create two rectangles. The size does not matter. In the first rectangle, type the words “Symbol-A.” In the second, type in the words “Symbol-B.” Make sure your pointer tool is selected. Select both symbols. Do this by selecting one of the symbols (its sizing handles turn on and are green), and then holding down Shift and selecting the other (its sizing handles turn on and are cyan). Now release Shift, hold down Ctrl, and drag out a new copy of both symbols. Grand!

If the two new rectangles are not already selected, select them both and then select Shape, Grouping, Group from the menus. Notice how what were two distinct and separate symbols has become for all intents and purposes a single symbol. The sizing handles are around the entire bounded area of both of the former individual symbols. With the new symbol selected, begin entering text onto the symbol. Which former symbol seemed to accept the text? The answer is the “top-most” in the “z-order.” This means that when you create two symbols, each symbol as it is created is at the top of the z-ordering stack. You can, of course, change their order by selecting Shape, Bring Forward; Shape, Bring to Front; Shape, Send Backward; or Shape, Send to Back from the menu for any symbol. The order that they exist in will be their order within the new Group SmartShape symbol.
