Formulas Versus Results

As you have just seen, accessing the Formula property of a Cell object causes the return of the information stored in the SmartShape symbol's ShapeSheet cell in the form of the formula as a string. Remember when we first began looking at ShapeSheet cells in Chapter 2, “An Introduction to ShapeSheet Programming.” We discussed back then that there were two different methods of viewing a ShapeSheet cell: viewing formulas or viewing values. ActiveX Automation has a direct corollary. There are two distinct retrieval properties of a Cell object: the Formula property (which equates to the Formula view in a ShapeSheet) and the Result property (which equates to the Value view in a ShapeSheet). The Result property has four variants: Result, ResultInt (a long integer), ResultIU (result in internal units), and ResultStr (result as a string only).

As shown previously, accessing the Formula property returns a string and is called with the following syntax:
