Chapter 2. An Introduction to ShapeSheet... > The Controls Section of the ShapeShe...

The Controls Section of the ShapeSheet

Ah, control! It makes you think that you just might be in charge of something, right? Perhaps. In Visio terms, a control on a SmartShape symbol is yet another “green thing.” Similar to a sizing handle, it is green, but dimmer. When you select a SmartShape symbol and then click-and-drag on a control handle, two things will become readily apparent. First, by pausing on the handle before clicking it, you will generally see a brief item of information displayed in a help box. This assists you in understanding what the control handle is for. Second, when you drag the control handle around, it manipulates some aspect of the SmartShape symbol: its physical geometry, its rotation, its size, the location of parts of the symbol, or other functional requirements. This is a very handy little function that Visio has given you as developers. In a moment, you are going to create a shape to exploit the features of the control handle, but first I'll explain each cell in the Controls row and detail its functionality.

The Controls Row in the ShapeSheet

There are eight cells in a Controls row.
