The VBA IDE

As I stated earlier, the VBA IDE in Visio 5.0 is identical to that within Microsoft Office 97. Visio 5.0 is utilizing VBA 5.0, as does Office 97. The VBA IDE in Visio 2000 is identical to that within Microsoft Office 2000. Visio 2000 is utilizing VBA 6.0, as does Office 2000. The beauty of this parity is that once you have learned the IDE in any one application, you are fully up-to-speed in any other application. The only learning curve you must traverse is the particular object model for the application you want to control with your Automation Controller application. All of the services provided in VBA that you have used while developing Microsoft Office applications are fully implemented in Visio's VBA IDE.

I'll presume that you are comfortable with the VBA IDE and will not detail each and every feature in it. Should you want more information about VBA and programming within the VBA IDE, I direct you to a rather brilliant book by two friends and colleagues of mine, Ken Getz and Mike Gilbert. The book is entitled VBA Developer's Handbook (Sybex 1997). It weighs in at as much, if not more than, this book, so by sheer heft alone you are increasing your programming strength.
