Chapter 11. ActiveX Basics > Visio's Implementation of VBA

Visio's Implementation of VBA

Visio 2000 Standard Edition, Technical Edition, Professional Edition, and Enterprise Edition all include as core technology a fully licensed implementation of Microsoft Visual Basic, Applications Edition revision 6.0. This addition brings to Visio a fully integrated programming environment that will facilitate custom applications running within Visio's Application Memory Space. As a result, applications written using Visio's licensing of VBA will run at a rate of up to 10 times faster than those written in standalone implementations of Microsoft Visual Basic 6.0 and will offer complete language and function parity with VB 6.0.

The Visio implementation of the VBA integrated development environment (IDE) is fully consistent with the VBA IDE implementation shipping with Microsoft Office 2000 (Microsoft Excel 2000, Word 2000, PowerPoint 2000, Microsoft Access 2000, and Microsoft Outlook 2000). The menu system, development environment, and macro launch are identical to the VBA menu in Office 2000. Additionally, the Visio 2000 family allows macros written in VBA to be launched via an event registered in VBA or a Visio SmartShapes shape sheet or via a shortcut menu item on either a Visio SmartShapes symbol or a Visio drawing page.
