Lesson 27. Saving and Publishing Workboo... > Adding Hyperlinks to a Worksheet

Adding Hyperlinks to a Worksheet

A hyperlink is a bit of text or a graphic that, when clicked, takes the user to a Web page, to a file on your hard disk, or to a file on a local network. You can also add a hyperlink to another sheet in the workbook if you like. To add a hyperlink, follow these steps:

  1. Select the text or graphic you want to use for the link.

  2. Click the Insert Hyperlink button on the Standard toolbar.

  3. If asked, make sure you save your workbook. The Insert Hyperlink dialog box appears, as shown in Figure 27.6.

  4. Perform one of the following:

To link to a file or Web page. Enter the address of the Web page or file to which you want to link in the Type the file or Web page name text box, or click the File or Web Page button to select it from a dialog box. You can also click Recent Files or Browsed Pages to select it from a list. If you want to click to a bookmark within a Web page, select the page first, then click the Bookmark button, and select the bookmark you want to use.

To link to a location within the workbook. Click the Place in This Document button in the Places bar. Then enter the cell address in the Type the cell reference text box, or select it from the Or select a place in this document list.

To create a link to a new workbook. Click the Create New Document button in the Places bar. Then type a name for the document in the Name of new document text box. To save the workbook in a directory other than the one shown, click the Browse button and select the directory you want to use.

To create a link to an email address (so that when clicked, the link will open your email program, display a message window, and automatically address the email message), click the E-Mail Address button in the Places bar. Then type the email address you want to link to in the E-mail address text box, or select one from the Recently used email addresses list. If you want to enter a subject for the message, type one in the Subject text box.

  5. To display a ScreenTip when the mouse pointer rests on the hyperlink, click ScreenTip, and enter the description you want to display. Click OK.

  6. Click OK. The text in the cell you selected becomes blue and underlined.
