Entering Different Types of Data 43 Entering a Series of Numbers, Dates, and Other Data Entering a series (such as January, February, and March or 1998, 1999, and 2000) is similar to filling a cell's contents. As you drag the fill handle of the original cell, Excel analyzes the first entry and creates a series of entries based on it. For example, if you type Monday in a cell, and then drag the cell's fill handle over some adjacent cells, you'll create the series Monday, Tuesday, Wednes- day.... As you drag, the bubble lets you know exactly what you're filling so that you can stop at the appropriate cell to create exactly the series you want. If you're filling a number, a month, or other item that might be interpreted as a series (such as January, February, and so on), and you don't want to create a series--you just want to copy the contents of the cell exactly--then press and hold the Ctrl key as you drag the fill handle. If you want to create a series such as 10, 20, 30, and so on, and Excel doesn't create the series when you drag the fill handle, or it creates the wrong series, here's what to do: 1. 2. 3. 4. Enter the first value in the series in one cell. Enter the second value in the series in the next cell. Select both cells by clicking on the first cell and dragging over the second cell. Drag the fill handle as usual. Excel will analyze the two cells, see the pattern, and recreate it. Entering the Same Data in a Column Over and Over Entering the same values over and over in a column is easy. When you type the first few letters of an entry, AutoComplete intelligently completes the entry for you based on the entries you've already made in that particular column. (AutoComplete works with data entered in columns only, not rows.)
