Lesson 9. Attaching Items to a Message > Understanding Attachment Format Types

Understanding Attachment Format Types

When you attach a file to an email message, it is coded in a special way so that the information remains intact when sent as part of the email message. Two of the most popular coding systems for attachments are MIME (Multipurpose Internet Mail Extension) and UUEncoding.

Note

MIME This coding scheme places a header in the email message just before the information contained in the attached file. This lets the recipient's email client recognize which part of the sent message is the message text and which part is the attachment. Some online services and email packages have a problem decoding MIME attached files.

UUEncoding One of the most popular coding schemes. Most email packages can recognize and decode UUEncoded messages.
