Using Boldface, Italics, and Underlining

You can display any of Word's fonts in boldface, italic, or underline. You can also use a combination of these effects. As with other formatting, you can apply these effects to existing text by first selecting the text, or you can apply them to text you are about to type.

The quickest ways to assign boldface, italics, or underlining are by typing keyboard shortcuts or by clicking the buttons on the Formatting toolbar (see Table 10.1). Click a button to turn the corresponding attribute on; click it again to turn it off. When the cursor is at a location where one of these attributes is turned on, the corresponding toolbar button appears depressed.
