Changing Indentation

The distance between your text and the left and right edges of the page is controlled by two things: the left and right page margins and the text indentation. Margins, which are covered in Lesson 16, "Working with Margins, Pages, and Sections," are usually changed only for entire documents or for large sections of a document. For smaller sections of text, such as individual lines and paragraphs, use indentation.

Plain English

Indentation The distance between a paragraph's text and the margins for the entire document. For example, if the left margin is set at one inch and a paragraph has a one-inch indentation, that paragraph starts two inches from the edge of the paper.
