Lesson 15. Advanced Style Techniques > Assigning Shortcut Keys to Styles

Assigning Shortcut Keys to Styles

If you use some styles frequently, or if you prefer to use the keyboard rather than the mouse, you can assign shortcut key combinations to styles. Then all you need to do to assign the style is press the specified keys. Here's how to do it:

  1. Click Format, Style to open the Style dialog box. Select the desired style in the Styles list.

  2. Click Modify to open the Modify Style dialog box.

  3. Click the shortcut key button to open the Customize Keyboard dialog box (see Figure 15.4).

  4. Press the key combination you want assigned to the style. The Press New Shortcut Key box displays a description of the keys you pressed. Just below this box, Word indicates if the shortcut key already has an assigned style/command or if it is unassigned.

  5. To accept the shortcut key, click the Assign button. To enter a different shortcut key, press Backspace to erase the key, and then return to step 4.

  6. Click Close to return to the Modify Style dialog box. Click OK to return to the Styles dialog box and click Close to return to your document.
