Lesson 17. Adding Page Numbers, Headers,... > Adding or Editing a Header or Footer

Adding or Editing a Header or Footer

To add a header or footer to your document, or to edit an existing header or footer, follow these steps:

  1. If your document is divided into sections, move the cursor to any location in the section where you want the header or footer placed.

  2. Click View, Header and Footer. Word switches to Print Layout view and displays the current page's header enclosed in a nonprinting dashed line (see Figure 17.2). Regular document text is dimmed, and the Header and Footer toolbar is displayed. On the toolbar, click the Switch Between Header and Footer button to switch between the current page's header and footer.

  3. Enter the header or footer text and formatting using the normal Word editing techniques. Use the Alignment buttons on the Formatting toolbar to control the placement of items in the header/footer. Press Tab to move to the center and right parts of the header or footer. Press Enter to start a new line in the header or footer.

  4. Use the other toolbar buttons (described in Table 17.1) to perform the indicated actions.

  5. When finished, click the Close button on the Header and Footer toolbar to return to the document. To delete the contents of a header or footer, select all the text therein, and then press Delete.
