Lesson 17. Adding Page Numbers, Headers,... > What Are Headers and Footers?

What Are Headers and Footers?

A header or footer is text that prints at the top (header) or bottom (footer) of every page of a document. Headers and footers can show the page number and are useful for displaying chapter titles, authors'names, and similar information. Word offers several header/footer options, including the following:

  • The same header/footer on every page of the document.

  • One header/footer on the first page of the document and a different header/footer on all other pages.

  • One header/footer on odd-numbered pages and a different header/footer on even-numbered pages.

  • If your document is divided into sections, you can have a different header/footer for each section.
