Hour 18. Analyzing Progress and Revising the Schedule

Project management is sometimes compared to risk management. The purpose of tracking, updating, and revising a schedule is to not only meet the stated goals, but also to correct problems quickly along the way. One common analogy is that you, as the project manager and captain of the ship, need to see that small black dot on the horizon long before it gets close enough to be recognized as a 200-ton tanker about to crash into your ship.

What warnings will you have? An overall project report can give you a reading on the pulse as a whole. Also in Project 98, variances point toward tasks and work drifting off schedule. For detailed assessment of work versus cost, an Earned Value Analysis is included, and there are visual clues to progress available on custom Gantt Charts.
