Hour 12. Editing Resource Assignments > Contouring Resource Assignments

Contouring Resource Assignments

When Project creates an assignment, it schedules the same amount of assigned units during each time period until the task is completed, thus producing an even, or "flat," level of activity each period. This is called a flat assignment profile, neither rising nor falling over time. In reality, many tasks require varying amounts of work throughout their duration; for some, most of the work comes up front and then tapers off (sometimes called a front loaded profile), and others start out with light work loads that build as the task nears completion (also called a back loaded profile).

If the actual work profile needs to vary from period to period, with peaks and valleys of activity, or a rising (or falling) trend of activity, you can use one of Project's predefined assignment profiles, called contours—or you can create your own contour by manipulating the scheduled work for each period.
