Choosing the Task Settings for Assignments

The first thing you should do when planning to assign a resource to a task is check the task's settings for Task Type and Effort Driven. These settings govern how Project calculates the task schedule after you assign a resource. You might recall from the previous Hour that the Task Type comes into play when you change one of the variables (task duration, units assigned, or work assigned) in the work formula. The type determines which of the two remaining variables in the formula will be kept fixed.

The Effort Driven setting comes into play only if you assign more than one resource to a task. If Effort Driven is on, then all resources assigned to a task are treated as dividing up a constant amount of work; changing the number of resources changes the work load assigned to the remaining resources and usually affects task duration.
