Analyzing Variances and Revising the Schedule

Despite your best efforts, projects usually do not track exactly as planned. Investigating the difference between the current schedule and the baseline plan is an important part of the project manager's job. The sooner you know how the project is diverging from the original plan, and by how much, the sooner you can take corrective action.

Variance The calculated difference between a baseline value and the most current data value. See Table 18.1 for several common calculations used to determine the variance.
