8. Word Meets Web

As the Internet continues to play an ever larger role in human self-expression—with things like personal blogs, online communities, and Web sites devoted to every subject imaginable—it seems as though every piece of self-respecting software, from databases to games, is replete with Web-ready features. Where would you be if you couldn't convert, say, your recipe file into a Web page for the world to see? Or keep a daily journal for your friends (and enemies) to read online?

Microsoft has no intention of being left out of all the fun, so all the key players in Office 2004 can convert your creations—like PowerPoint slideshows, Excel spreadsheets, and Entourage calendars—into Web pages. But for traditional, hard-working Web pages, Word is still the Web workhorse.
