13. Basic Excel

The best ad Microsoft ever ran for Excel went like this: "99% of spreadsheet users use Microsoft Excel. What are we doing wrong?" It was good because it was true; Excel is the biggest thing going when it comes to hard-core business programs. But Microsoft still seems determined to keep finding ways to make it better, warming the hearts of accountants and statisticians the world over.

Excel 2004 sneaks in a few subtle new features like Smart Buttons—they look familiar 'cause you've seen 'em in Word. Also new is the Page Layout view, which displays your spreadsheet on the monitor exactly as it will look when printed (Windex streaks excepted). Charts in Excel 2004 have also been vastly improved, as have the means to edit and check your work.
