Chapter 7. Managing E-mail Using Acrobat > Securing File Attachments

Securing File Attachments

Needless to say, Acrobat has the answer to Abby’s concerns, and she’s not dreaming! Acrobat 7 Professional contains a new feature called an eEnvelope, used as a secure wrapper for a document and its attachments. An eEnvelope is the digital equivalent of a courier-delivered package—the courier cycles into your office, waits for a signature, and then hands over the package. Acrobat can do much the same thing, without leaving any tire treads in your lobby. eEnvelopes even look like envelopes!

Encryption using an eEnvelope doesn’t modify the file attachments in any way. Just like a courier package, once you “break” the seal on the document—that is, once your recipient extracts the file attachments and saves them—the files are no longer protected.
