Chapter 4. Creating an Interactive Map > Naming Project Content

Naming Project Content

Before starting the button-building process, it’s important to take a few minutes to plan how the content will be named. Buttons are added using the default name “Button1” for the first button, with the number changing sequentially as additional buttons are added. Working with Acrobat’s method for creating multiple copies of the same button complicates things even further by appending another number after the default number.

Although it is simple to keep track of three or four buttons in a project, when you are working with many buttons, as in this project, planning the naming structure for the buttons beforehand can save a lot of time in the long run.

For Amanda, the process starts with the text and image pop-up names. Amanda has used the content of the text pop-up and the content of the corresponding image prefaced with “t_” for text files and “i_” for image files. For example, the text image that describes Fleur-de-Lis Travel’s mystery tour is named t_mystery.pdf; the corresponding image pop-up is named i_mystery.jpg. The three buttons for the mystery unit will be named

  • b_mystery—for the hotspot button that contains the icon the user moves their pointer over to see the mystery text and image

  • t_mystery—for the button that contains the text pop-up the user sees when the b_mystery button is active

  • i_mystery—for the button that contains the image pop-up the user also sees when the b_mystery button is active

As you’ll see later in this project, when actions are applied to the buttons, prefacing the button names with a letter divides the collection of button objects into categories that are much easier to sort through and makes troubleshooting any problems a lot easier.

The method you use for naming a series of objects in Acrobat is a matter of personal preference. Plan before you start. Use whatever naming structure you find understandable. Just be sure the names are useful in terms of keeping straight both the content and the relationships among the objects straight.
