Chapter 4. Creating an Interactive Map > Steps Involved in This Project

Steps Involved in This Project

In addition to building the set of buttons and pop-ups, Amanda decides at the end of the project to add a background for the text pop-ups, which is done in Photoshop directly from Acrobat. If you don’t work with Photoshop, you can work with a different image editing program. Finally, she adds security to protect the content of the document.

To create her interactive map, Amanda needs

  • A map image to use as a background for the project. The map must be sized correctly so that a user/viewer can see the whole map without having to scroll the page.

  • A clear naming system. Amanda is working with a fair number of similar objects, and good design includes attention to the structure as well as the content of the work.

  • Several copies of a button to serve as “hotspot” buttons on the map—that is, buttons that produce an effect in response to a user’s mouse click.

  • A number of photographic images to use for the pop-ups. To make the production process simpler, the images should share common dimensions.

  • A number of text images to use for pop-ups that provide information on her agency’s services, again using similar dimensions for simplicity and a unified appearance.

  • A link from the map to the Fleur-de-Lis Web site.

  • To make the finished project as small in size as possible because her users will be viewing the document online using either Acrobat or Adobe Reader.

  • To apply simple security to protect the integrity of her project.

In the next sections of this chapter, you see how Amanda goes about building her interactive map, starting with the image preparation. If you don’t plan to convert the images yourself in an image-editing program, skip ahead to the section “Converting Images in Acrobat.” If you are working with Photoshop or another image editing program, read on.
