I'm grateful to the wonderful people at Peachpit/Adobe Press for their support and encouragement throughout the project. It was a novel idea to publish a book on the free Adobe Reader program, and everyone at Peachpit/Adobe Press embraced the idea without reservation.

My sincere thanks go to Christine Yarrow, Marjorie Baer, and Kelly Ryer for accepting the idea and coordinating the team to move ahead on the project. Marjorie and Kelly helped form the book idea and design, and without their support, this book would not have been published. Additionally, I want to thank Nancy Ruenzel, Vice President of Pearson Technology Group, for approving the project and giving the go-ahead to move forward.

Any book on computer software is written and developed through a team effort. The strength of the book is dependent on the strength of the team. I am fortunate again to have with me Lori DeFurio, Developer Evangelist at Adobe Systems, who graciously donated her time as technical editor. For the past several books I've written on the Adobe Acrobat family of products, Lori has been my right arm. True to form, Lori went beyond the editing job and investigated, researched, and diagnosed problems, workarounds, and issues to help make this book technically solid. Thanks again, Lori, for the great contribution you made on this work. Along with Lori, I'd like to thank Leonard Rosenthol of PDF Sages, who backed up Lori with some assistance in technical editing. Leonard, being a king of XML and a cross-platform guru, was invaluable to the project.

In addition to Lori's technical editing, I want to thank my team at Peachpit/Adobe Press: Becky Morgan, Managing Editor; Anne Marie Walker, Project Editor; Sally Zahner, Copyeditor; Lisa Brazieal, Production Editor; Rebecca Ross, Permissions Editor; Charlene Charles Will for the cover design; and all the people in the background in sales, marketing, and production who worked hard to get the book out in record time.

A special thank you goes to my good friend and colleague Karl De Abrew, President and CEO of Planet PDF, for his kind words in the Foreword. Additional thanks to other Planet PDF people for their support and insights: Kurt Foss, Dan Shea, Richard Crocker, Sam Chandler, and the rest of the Planet PDFteam. I also extend my appreciation to Joanna Rivard and Don Fluckinger of PDFzone; Jim Healy, founder and CTO of FormRouter, Inc.; and all the people on the Acrobat 7 development team who assisted me throughout the prerelease program.

I am additionally grateful for contributions from Paul Showalter of the U.S. Internal Revenue Service, and Les Greenburg of the U.S. Government Printing Office. Much appreciation goes to Charles Myers of Adobe Systems for supplying me with the Adobe PDF document extended with usage rights applied with Adobe LiveCycle Reader Extensions that you can download from the Peachpit companion Web site.

I want to thank my good friends Michael and Jamie Perry, Ed and Marguerite Webster, and Lisle Gates for allowing me to capture them on camera and use them for some of the photo images contained in designs and layouts for the sample files.

I am truly grateful to the readers of my other Acrobat books who contacted me with questions, comments, and tips over the past decade. Your letters continually help me keep in touch with real problems related to real users, and I always learn more from you than any other source. I'm excited about this book and hope it is of some help to you and others who want to learn more about the Adobe Reader program.
