Hyphenation

Word’s hyphenation feature can hyphenate words so they fit better on a line. Word can hyphenate the words in your documents automatically as you type or manually when you have finished typing.

✓ Tips

  • Hyphenation helps prevent ragged right margins in left-aligned text and large gaps between words in full-justified text. I tell you about alignment in Chapter 3.

  • To prevent text from being hyphenated, select it and then turn on the Don’t hyphenate option in the Line and Page Breaks pane of the Paragraph dialog (Figure 27). I explain the options in the Paragraph dialog in Chapter 3.

Figure 27. Use the Line and Page Breaks pane of the Paragraph dialog to prevent hyphenation in selected paragraphs.
