Lesson 14. Creating PDF Forms > Adding special format restrictions

Adding special format restrictions

You can use special formatting to restrict the type of data that is entered into a form field, or convert information into a specific format. For example, you can set fields to accept only numbers, or conform to special formats, such as those used for ZIP codes or telephone numbers.

1.
If necessary, from the Tools menu, select Advanced Editing > Show Advanced Editing Toolbar. Choose the Select Object tool () from the Advanced Editing toolbar. Double-click the ZIP code field you created in the previous section.

2.
Choose the Format tab and select Special from the Select format category pull-down menu. Choose Zip Code from the list of available formatting choices. This will restrict the user's entry to a five-digit numerical value. Click the Close button to close the window.

3.
Double-click the Phone field you created in the previous section.

4.
Choose the Format tab and select Special from the Select format category.

5.
Under the Special Options header, choose Phone Number. This will restrict data being entered to a 10-digit numerical value, and will display the field as a conventional North American telephone number.

6.
Click the Close button to close the window.
