Lesson 14. Creating PDF Forms > Adding text fields

Adding text fields

Users will use text fields to enter letters and numbers that provide information, such as their name or telephone number. Text fields are represented by boxes on the form, and are created using the Text Field tool.

1.
From the Forms toolbar, choose the Text Field tool ().

2.
Move your cursor to the box next to the area titled Name.

3.
Position the crosshair at the upper left corner of the box. Click and drag downward and to the right to trace the box. The Text Field Properties dialog box opens after you have finished drawing the region for the field.

4.
Choose the General tab and set the following:

  • For Name, type Name.

  • For Tooltip, type Enter your name here.

Tooltips appear when the cursor is placed over a form field. They provide contextual help or information.

Leave the other settings in this tab at their default values. The Name field is used to apply names to each form field, such as Address or Phone Number. You will use this information about each form field to identify the data if it is exported. The names of form fields should be descriptive.

5.
Choose the Appearance tab and for Font Size choose 10. This sets the size of the text entered into this field. Leave the other settings in this tab at their default values.

6.
Choose the Options tab and for Alignment, select Center. Leave the other settings in this tab at their default values.

7.
Click the Close button to close the Text Field Properties dialog box.

8.
Choose the Hand tool () and click within the Name field you created. Enter your name, and note that the text appears using the attributes you applied.
