Balance Accounts p. 86

  • If you use online banking, Quicken’s Auto-Reconcile can balance your accounts automatically, every time that you download transactions from your financial institutions. This saves you even more time. To turn on Auto-Reconcile on Windows on an account that has already been activated for online banking (see Chapter 5), choose Cash Flow > Reconcile. The Reconcile Online Account dialog opens. Make sure that Online Balance is selected, then check Auto reconcile after compare to register, then click OK. On the Mac, choose Quicken 2005 > Preferences, then click the Auto-Reconcile category. Check Enable Auto-Reconcile, then click OK.

Correct Differences p. 89

  • The most common mistake you’ll find in your registers is transposing two digits in data entry.

  • If you’re off by a small amount that is a round number, it’s likely that you missed a bank service charge. Check your statement carefully for charges you don’t normally see, such as those for check printing or using another bank’s ATM.

  • Using online banking makes balancing your checkbook and other accounts even easier, because you download your bank and credit card statement directly into Quicken’s account registers. This eliminates most data entry errors.
