Chapter 15. Working Offline > Composing and Posting Articles Offline

Composing and Posting Articles Offline

While offline, you can create new articles for newsgroups and write replies to articles (see Chapter 14). Rather than send the articles immediately, Entourage holds them in the Outbox until the next connection with the news server is made.

To post articles

1.
Create the message while offline.

2.
Do one of the following:

  • Click the Send Now, Send Later, Post Now, or Post Later toolbar icon.

Working Offline with an IMAP or Exchange Server Account

While accounts from local Internet service providers are typically POP/POP3-based, an increasing number of users have IMAP or Exchange server accounts. The basic difference between POP and the latter account types is that POP email, newsgroup messages, and other material are downloaded to your computer and then deleted from the ISP's servers. With an IMAP or Exchange server account, the material normally resides only on the server. When you're reading email or newsgroup articles, you must have an active connection because you're actually reading the material from the server.

Entourage, however, makes offline work as easy for IMAP and Exchange server users as it does for those with a POP account. Entourage makes copies of all email and newsgroup messages, storing them locally on your Mac's hard disk. Thus, as long as the material has been downloaded into Entourage, it's available for reading—even when working offline.

  • From the Message menu, choose Send Message Now, Send Message Later, Post Message Now, or Post Message Later.

  • Press or .

3.
If you chose a “Now” command, you are given an opportunity to send the message immediately (see Figure 15.3); click Cancel. The message is stored in the Outbox.

or

If you chose a “Later” command, the message is automatically stored in the Outbox.

4.
When you are ready to connect to the mail server, do one of the following:

  • Choose Tools > Send & Receive > Send & Receive All, click the Send & Receive toolbar icon, or press .

  • Choose Tools > Send & Receive > Send All or press .

  • Choose Tools > Send & Receive, followed by the name of the email account from which the articles are being sent.

The dialog box shown previously in Figure 15.3 appears again.

5.
Do one of the following:

  • Click Connect to connect and send and receive waiting messages, and then use your dialer (such as Internet Connect) to disconnect from the Internet.

  • Click Work Online to connect, send and receive waiting messages, and remain connected.
