Chapter 14. Posting to Newsgroups

If you want to participate in a newsgroup (rather than just read other people's articles), you can post new articles or reply to articles written by others. All articles are composed in a normal message window (Figure 14.1). You can post any of the following types of articles:

  • A new article to a newsgroup. The article is listed in the newsgroup's article list and can be read by anyone.

  • A reply to an existing article. The article becomes part of a chain of related articles in the newsgroup called a thread.

  • A direct reply to an individual, sent as email. Only the author of the original article sees the reply, not the newsgroup.

  • A reply to an article, posted to the newsgroup and sent to the author. This public response to an article can be viewed by anyone who follows the newsgroup. To assure that the author also sees your response, a copy of the reply is sent to him or her via email.
