Chapter 5. Text Formatting > Using Word Styles

Using Word Styles

A style contains text-formatting settings. Using styles, you can quickly apply a set combination of formatting to characters or paragraphs. A paragraph style named Head A, for example, can contain all the formatting for one type of heading, such as its font, space after, and alignment. To format text as a heading, you select the heading and then choose the Heading A style from the Style list.

Character styles contain font formatting and are applied to selected characters. Paragraph styles are applied to entire paragraphs and contain both font and paragraph formatting. When no specific style is applied, paragraphs use the Normal style and text is formatted with the Default Paragraph Font style.
