Chapter 9. Spreadsheet Essentials > Naming Cell Ranges

Naming Cell Ranges

To make it easy to find a particular cell range, create a chart from it, or reference it in a formula, you can assign a name to any cell or range. Such names are referred to as range names, named ranges, or names.

For example, you could assign the name April to a column of April sales figures, and refer to it in a formula by name: =SUM(April) rather than =SUM(D3:D14). You can assign a name to a single cell, a subset of a column or row, a group of cells that spans several rows or columns, or a group of nonadjacent cells.
