Chapter 4. Document Formatting > Paper Size and Orientation

Paper Size and Orientation

Word's default printout setting is 8 ½" x 11" portrait (vertical orientation). The choices you make for paper size and orientation are applied to the current document only. New documents revert to the default settings.

To change paper size or orientation

Choose File > Page Setup.

The Page Setup dialog box appears (Figure 4.1).

Figure 4.1. Specify a paper size and orientation in the Page Setup dialog box.

Choose Page Attributes from the Settings drop-down menu. Select a destination printer from the Format for list of installed printers.

To set the page orientation, click the portrait icon for a standard vertical printout or a landscape icon for a horizontal printout.

Do one of the following:

  • Select a standard size from the Paper Size drop-down list.

  • To specify a nonstandard paper size, choose Custom Paper Size from the Settings drop-down menu, click the Use custom page size check box, and enter the dimensions in the Width and Height text boxes (Figure 4.2). Specify a paper feed method by clicking the appropriate icon and radio button, and then click OK.

Optional: To proportionately scale the printout to better fit the current paper size, enter a number in the Scale text box.

The default entry is 100 (for 100%).

Click OK to close the dialog box.

The document is modified to match the new Page Setup settings.
