Chapter 8. Creating Charts > Adjusting Series Elements

Adjusting Series Elements

For data series, you can specify whether or not a series has labels showing the values of the data points, and you can also change the format of the bars and columns in the series. Line, area, and pie charts have different formatting options.

To format data point labels

1.
Select the chart.

2.
From the Data Point Settings pop-up menu in the Data Point Label section of the Series tab of the Chart Inspector, select Show Value (Figure 8.26).

Figure 8.26. Choosing Show Value in the pop-up menu makes the numeric values in the Chart Data Editor appear in the chart.

This turns on the value labels for each data point in the chart (Figure 8.27).

Figure 8.27. Value labels initially appear within bars or columns, but you can change that with the Position pop-up menu.

3.
From the Data Point Settings pop-up menu, choose where you want the data point label to appear.

These settings change depending on the chart type. For example, a column chart has Top, Middle, Bottom and Outside options, and a bar chart has Left, Center, Right, and Outside options.

4.
If you want to show decimals in your data point values, type a number in the Decimals field.
