Non-Extreme PDF RIPs

There are, of course, a wagonload of RIPs that support PDF, even though they don't bear the Extreme brand name. In fact, any PostScript 3–based RIP can process native PDF files, and systems and packages from numerous vendors offer varying degrees of automation and customization as well as varying emphasis on PDF's role in the workflow.

Dalim's Litho system, for example, is geared toward the packaging industry with its support for 64 color channels (for mixing CMYK and spot colors on a job), step-and-repeat imposition, and object-oriented trapping and editing. For Litho, as well as for Dalim's Twist production system, PDF is just one of many possible input and output file formats. Dalim also offers Swing, a Linux-based workflow system that supports PDF.
