Alphabet Soup

You can't get very far into a discussion of PDF workflows—especially Extreme workflows—without finding yourself swimming in a sea of acronyms: PJTF, PPML, PDF/X, PDF/X-1, and PDF/X-3 to name a few. I've already touched on one of the big ones—job tickets that fall under the PJTF heading—but not even that one is straightforward, since there's also the emerging acronym JDF. The following section explains the differences between PJTF and JDF, and brings you up to speed on the significance of all the other TLAs—and FLAs and SLAs.

PJTF and JDF

It's hard to accept that workflow systems built within the last five years could already be out of date, but such is the way of technology. Even before PDF had been fully accepted by the market and partially integrated into most prepress workflows, a key element of Extreme was being pushed aside by a newer and more flexible element: PJTF job tickets were taking a backseat to JDF—or job definition format—tickets.
