Five, Six…

With version 5.0, Acrobat and especially the PDF file format itself (in version 1.4) have evolved into essential tools for “network publishing.” In this world—Adobe's vision of publishing's future—users will be able to publish content from any source (hard-copy scans; digital photos and graphics; page-layout files; sound, video, and animation clips) to any number of output formats and devices: not just print, the Web, and the occasional CD-ROM, but also handheld devices (such as Palm devices and cell phones), eBook readers, and DVDs (Figure 1-2). Before long the list will probably include tricorders and holodecks!
