Get in Line

As designers continue to bridge the worlds of print and the Web, and custom publishing becomes increasingly essential, so does our need for flexible document production. Imagine this (oversimplified) workflow: Take your widget sales backgrounder, combine it with your widget spec sheet, and—presto!—you have a new widget brochure. Certainly, you could save those files individually as PDF files and then manually mix and match them into a single file in Acrobat as described in Chapter 4. However, you can also save the original files as PostScript and combine them automatically into a single PDF file using Distiller.

Distiller offers two ways to combine PostScript files into one PDF: You can either combine multiple PostScript files that are located in various places on your hard drive, or you can combine all of the PostScript files that are in a single folder. Distiller can do both tasks using two PostScript programs that are available in the Distiller > Xtras folder: Runfilex.ps (Windows) or RunFilEx.ps (Mac) lets you choose and distill multiple PostScript files into one PDF file regardless of their physical location on a hard drive; and RunDirEx.txt distills all PostScript files in a specified folder.
