Security

Although it's not part of the Job Options dialog box, you can apply security settings to any PDF file that you distill, restricting not only who can open the file but also whether viewers can copy or extract contents, fill in form fields, add comments, print the document, and more. By default, Distiller doesn't apply any password or permissions restrictions to documents. Although you won't want your prepress partner or printer to inadvertently alter your file, keep in mind that these folks need to be able to make last-minute corrections (for example, fixing typos in display ads or changing prices in circular inserts) as well as to print, trap, separate, and impose the document.

Even if you're using PDF files to exchange comps but not for final production, viewers generally need to be able to print and annotate the files. If you're worried about secure file transfer, talk to your prepress partners about what they're already using or discuss using a secure service such as Wamnet. In publishing, it is sometimes more appropriate to use security options for exchanging confidential or sensitive documents (for example, proposals or competitive bids) among office staff or with clients rather than for production. You'll notice, also, that the options are really designed to facilitate the safe and controlled use of PDF-based forms.
