Job Options

Distiller's four default job options provide a starting point from which to create PDF files for a wide gamut of publishing needs. If you're producing PDF files to post on a Web site, for example, use Screen: This keeps your PDF files small by using RGB color, downsampling images to 72 dpi, optimizing files for page-at-a-time viewing, and saving in Acrobat 3.0 (PDF 1.2) format for the millions of old Readers currently installed. One step up in quality is the eBook job option. This conversion setting is also optimized for onscreen PDF viewing; however, it provides slightly higher image resolution and Acrobat 4.0 (PDF 1.3) compatibility. (I'll go over eBook job options in more depth in Chapter 7. Here, I want to focus on optimizing settings for prepress.)

In addition to these settings, two higher-quality job options exist: Print and Press, both of which are intended primarily for serious print designers and publishers. For exchanging comps or generating proofs, you can use Print. Intended for output to desktop printers and copiers as well as for CD-ROM publishing, this setting downsamples images to 300 dpi and provides high-quality JPEG compression. It also embeds all fonts and subsets at 100 percent, and it tags images for color management.
