Chapter Five. PDF in Prepress > Homegrown PDF Workflows

Homegrown PDF Workflows

There are as many prepress workflows as there are prepress shops, if not more. Although the steps required to get PDF-file pixels into spots of ink on a page vary from job to job, there are a few basic tasks that are typically completed:

  • Files are preflighted to find and fix problems that will prevent the job from rasterizing

  • Files are trapped to compensate for potential ink misregistration on press

  • Files are imposed (that is, pages of a document must be placed in order on large press sheets so that when they're printed, folded, and bound, they fall into order)

  • Files are separated into their grayscale channels to be imaged
