Create Adobe PDF Online

If the options presented here for creating PDF files for prepress have raised the hair on the back of your neck, try this more mellow alternative: Create Adobe PDF Online, a subscription service from Adobe at https://createpdf.adobe.com (also accessible from the Tools menu in Acrobat). This service, available only in North America, costs $10 a month or $100 a year and will create an unlimited number of PDF files for you automatically. You can try it for free for up to five files.

You can submit almost any file format, including Microsoft Office application files, native formats of every professional Adobe print application, Corel, EPS, TIFF (and other image file formats), and HTML. (The notable exception is QuarkXPress: You must convert XPress documents to PostScript and submit the PostScript file.) You upload the file from your hard drive, and it is distilled for you within a few minutes according to one of Distiller's five preset conversion settings—Web, Screen, eBook, Print, or Press. Files must be 10 MB or less (which can be limiting), and must be able to be processed in 15 minutes or less. You can opt to have the final PDF file display in a browser or emailed to you. Adobe also converts Web pages to PDF if you submit a URL, and it offers Paper Capture and Search PDF online services. See the company's Web site for more information (Figures 2-78 and 2-79).
