Chapter Two. How to Create PDF Files for... > Printing from an Application

Printing from an Application

With Acrobat 5.0, Adobe has greatly streamlined the process of creating PDF files. In the past you had little choice but to print a PostScript file to disk from your page-layout (or word processing or drawing or whatever) application and then run the PostScript file through Distiller to convert PostScript to PDF, but Adobe now lets you distill PDF files from within the Print dialog box of virtually all major design or publishing applications.

On the Mac, this method uses the AdobePS 8.7 printer driver, which Acrobat 5.0 installs automatically. On PCs, Acrobat installs the AdobePS 4.5 PostScript printer driver in Windows 95/98 systems, AdobePS 5.2 on Windows NT systems, and the system PostScript driver on Windows 2000 systems. On both platforms, Acrobat takes the PostScript data stream from the driver, launches and runs Distiller in the background, and produces the PDF.
