Chapter 4. Advanced Formatting > Bullets & Numbering

Bullets & Numbering

Word automatically includes bullets or numbers at the beginning of paragraphs to which you apply a bulleted or numbered list format (Figure 16).

Tips

  • You can apply list formats as you type or to paragraphs that have already been typed. Check Chapter 3 for details.

  • The bullet and number formats include hanging indents. I explain Word's indentation options in Chapter 3.

  • If you use Word's numbering format, Word will automatically increment the number for each consecutive paragraph.


To apply bulleted list formatting

Click the Bullets button on the Formatting palette.

Choose Format > Bullets and Numbering (Figure 5).

In the Bullets and Numbering dialog that appears, click the Bulleted tab to display its options (Figure 17).

Click the box that displays the type of bullet character that you want.

4.
Click OK.

Tips

  • To further customize a bullet list, after step 3 above, click the Customize button in the Bullets and Numbering dialog (Figure 17). Set options in the Customize bulleted list dialog that appears (Figure 18), and click OK.

  • Clicking the Bullets button on the Formatting Palette applies the last style of bullet set in the Bullets and Numbering dialog (Figure 17) or Customize bulleted list dialog (Figure 18).

  • You can use pictures for bullets. Click the Picture button in the Bulleted tab of the Bullets and Numbering dialog (Figure 17). Then use the Choose a Picture dialog that appears (Figure 19) to locate and insert a picture file as a bullet. Word automatically uses the same picture for all bullets in the list.

To apply numbered list formatting

Click the Numbering button on the Formatting Palette.

Choose Format > Bullets and Numbering (Figure 5).

In the Bullets and Numbering dialog that appears, click the Numbered tab to display its options (Figure 20).

Click the box that displays the numbering format that you want.

4.
Click OK.

Tips

  • To further customize a numbered list, after step 3 above, click the Customize button in the Bullets and Numbering dialog (Figure 20). Set options in the Customize numbered list dialog that appears (Figure 21), and click OK.

  • Clicking the Numbering button on the Formatting Palette applies the last style of numbering set in the Bullets and Numbering dialog (Figure 20) or Customize numbered list dialog (Figure 21).


To remove bulleted or numbered list formatting

1.
Choose Format > Bullets and Numbering (Figure 5).

2.
In the Bullets and Numbering dialog (Figure 17 or 20), click the None box.

3.
Click OK.

To remove bulleted list formatting, click the Bullets button on the Formatting Palette (Figure 22).
