Chapter 4. Creating PDFs > Automating Distiller

Automating Distiller

You can set up Acrobat Distiller to distill PostScript files into PDF files automatically. If you're on a network with a server, the server is a perfect place to install and set up Distiller for this purpose.

Two steps are involved in automating Distiller. First, the Distiller application itself must be running. Second, the PostScript files need to be placed in a “watched” folder from which Distiller can convert the files.

Distiller can be set up to find PostScript files in specified folders. If you have a folder set up as a watched folder, the program automatically converts any PostScript file dropped into that folder to a PDF document.

To make a watched folder:

1.
In Distiller, choose Watched Folders from the Settings menu (Ctrl+F/Command-F) (Figure 4.21).

The Watched Folders dialog box appears (Figure 4.22).

2.
Click Add to activate the Open dialog box.

3.
Select the folder that you want Distiller to watch and then click Choose (Figure 4.23).

4.
Click OK in the Watched Folders dialog box.

From this point forward, whenever Distiller is running, any PostScript files placed in the designated watched folder will be converted to PDF documents automatically.

Tip

  • Distiller will not convert read-only files.
