Chapter 14. Automating Acrobat > Using Consultant to Analyze PDF Files

Using Consultant to Analyze PDF Files

Adobe Acrobat ships with PDF Consultant as an integrated element. Use this feature to check and fix PDF files before you send out your document for everyone to view. PDF Consultant was created to check out all third-party plug-ins, or agents, for problems. PDF Consultant performs three functions:

  • Detect and Remove looks for unnecessary elements, such as actions or extra file attachments. These elements will be removed or reported, depending on which option you choose.

  • Audit Space Usage lists the number of bytes used for fonts, images, elements bookmarks, forms, and other elements in your file so that you can determine where you can cut back on file size.

  • Optimize Space creates a smaller PDF file by removing any definitions, bookmarks, and links that aren't active. Keep in mind that in PDF Consultant, optimizing a file refers strictly to reducing its size, as opposed to the term's other use in Acrobat, which means preparing the PDF for byte-serving.
