Chapter 9. Adding Multimedia to PDFs > Creating Other Multimedia Objects

Creating Other Multimedia Objects

Buttons aren't the only way for users to initiate an action. You can set up Acrobat documents so that an event happens when the mouse pointer rolls over an area. In this section, you'll create a sound rollover action. Acrobat can play any sound- or video-file format supported by Apple's QuickTime technology. QuickTime supports dozens of media-file formats, so nearly any kind of sound or movie clip will work in a PDF.

To create a rollover action:

1.
In an open PDF document, choose the Form tool (F) from the Editing toolbar.

2.
Drag to create the area where you want to make the rollover.

When you release the mouse button, the Field Properties dialog box appears.

3.
Type a name and a short description.

4.
Choose Button from the Type pop-up menu.

5.
Click the Appearance tab (Figure 9.11).

Figure 9.11. The Appearance tab of the Field Properties dialog box lets you choose border colors, text colors, and styles for your buttons.

6.
In the Border section, uncheck the Border Color and Background Color checkboxes.

These options make the rollover area indistinguishable from the rest of the page.

7.
Click the Actions tab (Figure 9.12).

8.
Select the Mouse Enter option in the When This Happens list.

9.
Click the Add button.

The Add an Action dialog box appears.

10.
From the Type pop-up menu, choose Sound. (Figure 9.13).

11.
Click the Select Sound button.

The Open dialog box appears.

12.
Select a sound file, and click Open.

13.
Click Set Action in the Add an Action dialog box.

The dialog box closes, and you return to the Field Properties dialog box.

14.
Click OK.
