Summary

Word is a great host for document-centric custom solutions. The ability to manipulate the numerous objects with programming code makes it possible to create applications that are just not possible via the functionality of the user interface. The robust features of mail merge, tables, and other Word features can be integrated with other systems, as demonstrated in this chapter with Access.

The Selection and Range objects provide all the means to work with any portion of a document. Events allow implementing functionality at many different processing steps. Taken all together, custom solutions built in Word are able to address many purposes beyond typical document creation. Chapter 9, “XML and Office,” demonstrates the robust features of XML in Word 2003. Chapters 12 and 15 show how custom development built on Word is used to solve real business problems.
